Hungarian national strategy on climate change
18/02/08
At the press conference following the Hungarian government's session on Thursday February 14 2008, the Minister of Environment and Water announced that the Cabinet passed the National Strategy on Climate Change of the portfolio for the years 2008-2025. Gábor Fodor explained that the most important components of the Strategy included the fulfilment of Hungary's international commitments, fighting against effects causing climate change, fighting against greenhouse gas emissions, and adjusting to the requirements of climate change.
Speaking of the details Gábor Fodor emphasized: economic growth must be separated from an increase in energy use. Based on EU expectations Hungary must decrease its greenhouse gas emissions by 18% by the year 2020 compared to the figures of 1990, for all the sectors, and the ratio of renewable resources must increase from 4.5% to 13% by that date. Gábor Fodor added that it was important to stimulate energy savings by giving the public consumer credits. There are several sources for implementing the Strategy since the Environment and Energy Operational Programme provides some HUF 110 billion for green energy development, the Environment Minister.
