EuroACE warmly welcomes the European Commission's proposal for a Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings (recast). The provisions should help to create 450,000 new jobs directly via the installation of energy saving measures in buildings. Many of these will be semi-skilled. Most will be employed by local SMEs.
The Directive’s philosophy is to encourage significant investment in improving the EU's building stock, in order to save running costs in the future. By doing so, the amount of fuel Europe needs to import will be minimised. Greenhouse gas emissions will also be reduced. In the commercial and services sector, competitivity will be improved.
If implemented purposefully, by 2020 the Directive will lead to a net savings of 25 billion euros each year for the European economy.
“We call upon the Council and the European Parliament to complete their endorsement of this proposal even faster than the 13 months that the original Energy Performance of Buildings Directive took from initial proposal to full legal agreement in 2001/2,” says Andrew Warren, Senior Advisor at EuroACE.
